MCIC is a nonprofit organization, organized according to the laws of the state of SC
(surrender 31, title 33, code of 1976) on March 6 2003. The planning actually began in the
spring of 2000, when the Lancaster School District applied for and received a grant from the
J. Marion Sims foundation to establish a task force that would be responsible for helping
students and families whose native language is not English.
The task force included educators, health care providers, law enforcement professionals,
community agency representatives, members of the faith community, and business leaders.
Several members were of Hispanic origin.
It was created to develop and implement a comprehensive communication and cultural
exchange system to support the delivery of community services to families whose home
languages is other than English. This exchange system has taken form in the Multi-Cultural
Information Center (MCIC).
The MCIC has obtained 501(c)(3) status. A board of 9 members, the majority of whom are
Hispanic/Latino, governs the MCIC.
The Moriah Baptist Association has provided space for the organization until September
2007, then The MCIC has moved to the space offered by Brooklyn Springs Elementary
School.
On August 3rd of 2009 Lancaster Area Literacy Cooperative, a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt
organization thats has a mission promoting cooperation within an integrated framework of
literacy providers by providing an effective forum for advocacy, for sharing resources and
expertise, and for facilitating sustainability of programs. Had offered space for the MCIC in
their location at 105 W. Dunlap St. Lancaster, SC.
