The MCIC is sponsored by the Foundation J Marion Sims which gave us a grant that will allow us to operate for
three years. After this date we should be self-sufficient or have other sponsors that sympathize with our labors.

The foundation J. Marion Sims Inc. owes its existence to the forward thinking of a group of visionary citizens of the
County of Lancaster. In 1994 they decided to sell the Elliott White Springs Memorial Hospital to the Community
Health Systems, Inc. guaranteeing the benefit of medical services with modern technology. This sale generated
important economic resources that were reinvested in the community. The foundation began to work as such in
March 28 of 1995, being elected James K Davis the first president at the directive meeting.
The Foundation J. Marion Sims takes its name from one of the historical and distinguished figures of the County of
Lancaster. Dr. James Marion Sims was one of the most famous doctors of his time, renowned as a surgical genius
and one of the founders of operative gynecology. He practiced shortly in Lancaster, before moving his practice to
Alabama, and later to the City of New York.

Dollar General’s commitment to literacy began with J.L. Turner, co-founder of Dollar General. With only a third grade
education, J.L. was able to overcome tremendous odds and launch a successful retail business.
As an extension of Dollar General’s corporate commitment to literacy, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation was
established in 1993 to help increase the functional literacy of adults, families and children.
